Use Motion Sensors

switchHere’s one that I haven’t implemented yet in my home, but it’s at the top of the list.  Install motion sensor light switches in rooms where lights often get left on.   I have two young daughters who never turn lights off.  At any point during the day, there will be any number of lights left on in rooms around our house.  I must admit, the payback on a project like this could be higher than many of my projects.  Motion sensor switches can run from $20-$40, so depending on how many you need the price tag could be fairly steep.   I’m going to start with just two or three and see how it goes.  My daughter’s bedrooms, their bathroom, and our laundry room will be at the top of the list.  I don’t know why our laundry room light gets left on so often.  My wife claims its not her, but I have my suspicions. Changing our a light switch is rated pretty high on the difficult scale of do-it-yourself projects, so approach this one with care.  Take all the necessary safety precautions such as turning off the power to the room you will be working in at the breaker box.  Here’s a good step-by-step set of instructions on how to accomplish the task. I’ll let you know how mine turn out.  I think it will make a dent in my bill! Photo credit:  www.leviton.com
