Memorial Day Recap

I hope your Memorial Day weekend was a great time to spend with family and friends.  My wife, daughters, and I spent the weekend at a family camp at a retreat center about an hour from home.  It was a great time to relax and forget about “real” life for a few days.

Before we left, I made sure to button up the house in order to keep the sun from heating the house too much.  After closing every curtain, blind, and shutter I could find, it was practically dark even at 9 am on Saturday morning.

It was expected to be warm, muggy, and rainy while we were gone.  I was worried that the house might heat up too much, so I set the thermostat at 80 degrees so the temperature in the house wouldn’t soar too high.

I was pleasantly surprised when we returned on Monday to find that the house was a very comfortable 75 degrees.  While I can’t be certain, I know that my A/C unit never kicked on.  I’ve written about this strategy before (here), but this was one more example of how simple it is to save energy at home.

Once again, hope you had a great holiday!  Have a great week.
