Laptop versus Desktop

We’re considering the purchase of a new computer for family use at home.  We currently have an almost 5 year old desktop PC that is showing its age.  We’re considering a laptop instead of a desktop primarily for portability, but in my research one of the side benefits I found is that laptops use much less electricity than desktops.

Depending on which source I reviewed, laptops save between 25% and 75% of the electricity used by a typical desktop.  The reason is that since laptops frequently run off battery power, they are designed to run more efficiently than desktop computers.

I wouldn’t let this be the determining factor when you make your decision as the total consumption of electricity by computers is typically much less than other appliances.  You are much better off to focus on other energy saving strategies that have a bigger bang for the buck.  For instance, I would make sure that I turned off my computer each night instead of leaving it on.  This alone will save you $5-$8 per month from your energy bill.

However, its nice to know that my shiny new laptop will save me a few bucks in lower energy bills.
